Another reason home–schooling has increased in popularity are cultural. Many parents feel that their children are not learning enough about their own cultures and are in essence losing their cultural identities attending physical public schools. Although physical public schools implement various cultural histories into their lesson plans, there’s not much room or time in the curriculum to advance further into specific areas. The lessons are usually brief and incomplete. Home–school parents can use their fast satellite internet connection to research and expand on these cultural lessons. Parents come up with sub lessons that teach children more about their culture as well as other cultures, including languages, foods, tradition, and history. Most of which are not taught in the physical school setting. For rural area communities, home–schooling through the use of satellite broadband internet has expanded and allowed more in depth education that will give their children the ability to academically and professionally thrive in the new age world we live in.
As your child’s home school teacher, you can also determine the morale and religious teachings your child is exposed to. And in regards to religious teaching, you are also able to control if or how much religious teachings are brought into your child’s realm. Your kids will have a precise view of what your family’s values entail and there will be no uncertainty as to what your family truly believes. What you teach your child is the way your family lives. There are more and more parents becoming dissatisfied with the public school system as it is now. They worry that recent congressional edicts are either pushing their children too hard or not pushing them nearly as much as they should be. Other parents are concerned with the government taking too much control on what can and can not be said, let alone taught to their children. Some parents fear that their children are not put in appropriate classes according to their abilities, but are massed -passed because of their age. And then there are other parents who had bad experiences in their past with the school system and are determined to make a better educational setting for their children.
Another area that is important to teach during these times is the idea of service. The natural bent of a child is to think only of themselves and to take care of their wants above all else. A cure for this ailment is to help the child see others and the needs they have and then to serve those people in some way. This can be as simple as raking leaves and doing yard work for family or neighbors, baking cookies and sharing them with others. Calling on elderly folks in the church, service activities can be as creative as the kids themselves. Check out my article about home preschoolers and socialization for other suggestions. The idea is to just get them to stop thinking about themselves for a while and letting them experience how good it makes them feel to give service to others. Home schooling middle grade students is a fun and challenging time for both you and your child. It is a time to stretch them mentally with their classes making sure all the fundamentals are covered. Then help them understand all the changes that are taking place in their own bodies and how they are part of a society and how they can help serve others in that society.
Home schooling also becomes a part of the family dynamics. Your family becomes “the teacher”. Family trips can incorporate lessons that your child enjoys. Cooking and gardening become lessons in math and science that are fun for you and your child. If your child makes a mistake in a recipe or in planting a plant, it is a chance for them to learn what went wrong without Being made fun of by other children. Vacations can incorporate social studies by teaching your child about the areas you are visiting without them realizing that they are learning.
What do you know about Charlotte Mason’s method? Charlotte mason was an important educator at the turn of the twentieth century. Her approach focused on three areas, life, discipline, and atmosphere. The home’s atmosphere and living books are the focus involved here. The methods were strict and centered mostly on good study habits while incorporating subjects that were easy to understand without the dry facts. You can locate this curriculum at many home school bookstores.
When you home school your child, competition is limited to your child being competitive with only themselves’. Your child’s confidence is not damaged. You know your child best and can therefore plan the curriculum to best awaken your child’s interest in any subject. You also can determine how each day is planned. If you have a tough science lesson, then you can follow that with a fun activity that incorporates language arts, such as reading an interesting story, or cooking to teach a math concept. Since you know your child best, you know what works best for them as a setting for learning. Some children learn more from reading, others from hands-on, visual activities.
