The government and state send out standardized tests that home schooled children are still required to take. Many “traditional” schools set days aside for these tests each year. Before administering the tests at home, check with your local school board to make sure that your child isn’t required sit in a school classroom first. In some areas, there are days set aside for local home schooled children to take the tests together. Use the information available through your local school board to plan your approach to yearly standardized tests.
Another reason home–schooling has increased in popularity are cultural. Many parents feel that their children are not learning enough about their own cultures and are in essence losing their cultural identities attending physical public schools. Although physical public schools implement various cultural histories into their lesson plans, there’s not much room or time in the curriculum to advance further into specific areas. The lessons are usually brief and incomplete. Home–school parents can use their fast satellite internet connection to research and expand on these cultural lessons. Parents come up with sub lessons that teach children more about their culture as well as other cultures, including languages, foods, tradition, and history. Most of which are not taught in the physical school setting. For rural area communities, home–schooling through the use of satellite broadband internet has expanded and allowed more in depth education that will give their children the ability to academically and professionally thrive in the new age world we live in.
One of the biggest benefits of home schooling is that if your child needs more time to master a specific skill or concept, you have the ability to let them master it at their own pace, rather than being dictated by the school board. With home schooling, your child sets their own pace of learning and you are able to give them far more individual attention than a teacher could with 24 other children to teach. Your child will also benefit from the fact that they aren’t the subject of ridicule from other children if they don’t understand something as fast as others.
Why shouldn’t you have your children stay at home and have them learn there? Do you, or for that matter, do they really like having to rise at the crack of dawn? And then they have to leave the coziness of home and venture out into a school where you have little or no contribution as to what they are learning. When you home school your children, you have the benefit of being able to regulate what they are learning. You can create the curriculum that best suits your child. Who knows your child better than you?
Another area that is important to teach during these times is the idea of service. The natural bent of a child is to think only of themselves and to take care of their wants above all else. A cure for this ailment is to help the child see others and the needs they have and then to serve those people in some way. This can be as simple as raking leaves and doing yard work for family or neighbors, baking cookies and sharing them with others. Calling on elderly folks in the church, service activities can be as creative as the kids themselves. Check out my article about home preschoolers and socialization for other suggestions. The idea is to just get them to stop thinking about themselves for a while and letting them experience how good it makes them feel to give service to others. Home schooling middle grade students is a fun and challenging time for both you and your child. It is a time to stretch them mentally with their classes making sure all the fundamentals are covered. Then help them understand all the changes that are taking place in their own bodies and how they are part of a society and how they can help serve others in that society.
You are never set in one style of home school curriculum. Some home schooling parents have found great success through the blending of different teaching styles and learning methods. Don’t forget, kids are very versatile elements what may work in one subject might not in another. Many parents worry that they wont be able to keep their kids interested. By blending curriculum you get the best of all of the worlds you want to explore and educational methods that you want to embrace. Your kids will likely enjoy the variety you put into your teaching for their learning styles. home schooling your kids is valuable to them and you which has been proven. The fact is that kids who were home schooled do better on tests and in college. The bonds between home schooled kids and their families are often stronger. home schooling’s efficacy has been a worry for some so this is reassuring for them. Before you start teaching your kids at home you will need to know which curriculum you intend to use. Talk to other parents and research your perspective curricula. You will find you path!
