Educationally you just need to build on the foundation you have already set in the elementary grades. It is important for a child’s future to make sure some subjects are done every year building on what the child already knows. Math, English and literature, history, science along with Bible are things that I insisted that our children have a course in every year. Because of the different learning personalities of the kids we would talk about which curriculum they would enjoy using for their courses and they were welcome to add to the list any courses that they wanted.
Home schooling also becomes a part of the family dynamics. Your family becomes “the teacher”. Family trips can incorporate lessons that your child enjoys. Cooking and gardening become lessons in math and science that are fun for you and your child. If your child makes a mistake in a recipe or in planting a plant, it is a chance for them to learn what went wrong without Being made fun of by other children. Vacations can incorporate social studies by teaching your child about the areas you are visiting without them realizing that they are learning.
A middle school aged child is starting to see the world outside of themselves and then has the chore of figuring out where they fit into that world. This is a good time to introduce curriculum that helps them learn about themselves and how their bodies work, a solid health curriculum works great during these ages. We also expanded on this theme with a module of sex education that we approved of. We had each of our children read a book by Josh Harris called “I Kissed Dating Good-bye.”
Many parents are wary of home schooling because they feel that their children will not get enough social contact with their peers. The truth is, with so many people opting to home school their children, there is a great network accessible for you to interact with other home school families. Feel that you aren’t smart enough to teach math or science? There are home school mom and dads who will trade off teaching certain subjects if you teach your children and theirs’ the subjects you are best at. There are many resources available to parents who desire to home school; never feel that you are alone in this endeavor. You just have to put in the time and the spunk to take on the tremendous responsibilities of delivering your child from the present and into the future. But what is more vital in your life than helping your child become the best they can be?. Many parents in consider home schooling for their children over normal school classes. Historically, most parents home schooled their children due to religious beliefs. Now, the reasons are more that religion. And, they are contrary to opinions where professionals once believe that you should not home school your children. Satellite broadband internet is making it possible for home schooling to break through the barriers of the once negative myths. As a matter of fact, many schools in urban cities are finding it cheaper to close schools and turn them into free public home school programs.
When you home school your child, competition is limited to your child being competitive with only themselves’. Your child’s confidence is not damaged. You know your child best and can therefore plan the curriculum to best awaken your child’s interest in any subject. You also can determine how each day is planned. If you have a tough science lesson, then you can follow that with a fun activity that incorporates language arts, such as reading an interesting story, or cooking to teach a math concept. Since you know your child best, you know what works best for them as a setting for learning. Some children learn more from reading, others from hands-on, visual activities.
Academic reasons are another area that home schooling has become popular in. Those living in rural areas who previously home schooled their children were required at one point to create lesson plans that followed state guidelines and standards. Thanks to fast satellite broadband internet, parents are finding interactive home–school programs that exceed state requirements. Some home–school programs feature live lessons for children where they can actually see and hear the teacher present lessons. The teacher gives visual step by step assistance and records it, allowing the child to gain repetitious learning. Previously, physical schools used repetition to teach all the time. Now they use so many methods, that from year to year the children have to relearn or unlearn a previous method. Also, once they teach a lesson, they move on to the next, not allowing the child to properly retain the taught information. The recorder live lesson method lets the children go back as many times as they need to until they get it.
